Inspection

  • Is the screen legible? 

  • Is the dimmer functional?

  • Is BNWAS operational through 'MANUAL ON" mode when the vessel is underway or at anchor and switched off at berth?
  • Are the first, second & third stage alarms test carried out as per PMS? 
  • Are all reset buttons in working condition? Ensure that there is no any alarm reset button in the outside of lookout positions (i.e. chartroom).
  • Is the key or password (as applicable) kept under Master's custody?
  • Are the date, time & position of activation / de-activation properly recorded in Bridge Log Book?

Common Poor Practices

  • The unit's key was not under Master's custody during navigation.

  • The bridge officers were aware of unit's password when asked.
  • No evidence of date, time & posistion of activation / de-activation in Bridge Log Book.
  • Enabled reset button was identified in chart room.
  • Reset buttons outside the wheelhouse found in poor condition or inoperable.
